Revisiting The Past

Originally uploaded by .bandit.

I've just returned from a long weekend in Washington DC as Certain Someone's guest. He has a conference this week there , and thought it would be nice to return to my birthplace . I haven't been "home " in a long time. With both of my parents gone, I have little connection. We arrived on separate flights late Friday afternoon and checked into the Washington Hilton and Towers. This was where Reagan was shot many years ago. My father had offices right across the street at the time. After a quick nap we walked around Dupont Circle. By this point I felt like a stranger in my hometown, but it was nice to rediscover it with my sweetie. We had a late dinner in a Osteria and returned to the hotel. On Saturday I called my dads best friend from his American University in Beirut days and we all met in Chinatown. My how that had changed as well. I remember my first job out of college in the old Woodward and Lothrop store. Chinatown was a little grittier and real back then. Now its very commercial and developed with Bed Bath and Beyond's alongside the eateries. Nevertheless the Dim Sum at Tony Chengs was the best I ever had. A tourist told us upon entering ,she had dined there twelve times on her visit as she rubbed her belly. Daddies friend and Certain Someone hit it off and I felt Daddy would have approved. He dropped us off on M St in Georgetown where we leisurely shopped, walked around the "new" waterfront ( another new concept to me ) by the canal, pigged out on ice cream and pizza at Paradisos. The Hagen Das shop was there when I was a teenager, so that was nice. Along the waterfront we witnessed a seedy fashion photoshoot. A boat owner let the girls hop on his craft as they posed and contorted for the camera. Certain Someone and I loved to people watch. Sunday we decided to rent a car and visit my old high school in Potomac and a house I lived in prior to my parents divorce. He was quite impressed with the all girls campus and ritzy real estate around my school. White Pickett fences and stables were the norm. We ate lunch in Potomac Village and drove out further to North Potomac. I was a little disappointed. The houses where I grew up did not seem as impressive as when I was a child. I saw a lady come out my old house( which looked the same , just smaller) and told her I was the first family that lived there. She said hi, and drove her car down the driveway and into a ditch. The craziest thing I ever saw. All the neighbors came out to try and help. I recognized one and he called his wife out. She invited us in for coffee, but we politely declined. Time sure does fly. We caught up for a few moments and left. Tom Wolf was right,'You can never go home again". I felt I closed a book on a long chapter. We drove to Great Falls and walked some miles along the C&O CANAL,viewed the dams, took photos, and just enjoyed the flora and fauna. A nice way to wrap up the day. I had one last treat remaining. We went to the Dancing Crab where I indulged in my favorite Maryland crabs cooked in Old Bay. Certain Someone tried one, but I felt they were to much work for him. He ordered a huge seafood platter. I ate like a happy kid with my bib and wet dirty hands covered in spice. We came back to the hotel and watched Kill Bill 1 and 2 like a old cozy couple. After breakfast we kissed goodbye and I drove the car back to the airport. The end our mini vacation. It was the best weekend ever! Thank you sweetie for making this happen.

I Never Thought It Could Happen To Me...

Millenium Park - Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Great Lawn

Over the weekend I gathered some friends and people from an art's association, I'm involved with, for a lawn concert. One of the guys brought along some people from his church. Certain Someone had with him two friends visiting from Stockholm. All in all a lovely evening,until...One of the "church" woman got quite tipsy and exuberant on her jug wine and friends Cheerio trail mix.In mid concert whilst I lay alongside my sweetie, she took a hunk of cheese and went crazy. Next I felt her push me belly and face down into the blanket and proclaimed 'I MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD'. She started to rub my derriere and back and commenting on how tense I was. As much as I protested she forcefully continues. Certain Someone or no one could stop her, and everyone was sssshhhisng us . Of course I was tense because this strange older Yoko Ono type who seemed to have suffered a stroke was rubbing my ass in front of hundreds of people.I tried to be polite and just let her rub a few moment's more to keep the commotion down. She eventually got the message and stopped. I thanked her for her services and thankfully the concert ended and we got the hell out. I pray I never see her again. Later that night as we went to sleep Certain Someone expressed that he had never been more mortified and he wished the ground had swallowed him up right there. Well how the hell did he think I felt!

Missing Nemo

Nemo

Sunday as Certain Someone and I were on the boat, his eye caught a glimpse of something. The Rockford River is a dark green murky body of water where you may find a occasional catfish jumping , see a live Human torpedo, or Daddy and Me water skiing teams decked out in bright costumes. Along the shoreline you admire beautiful houses and Goth kids doing a Happy Dance around a fountain. In other words, anything goes. So imagine our amazement when Certain Someone pointed out a floating plastic bag passing us by. Our friend B immediately jumped in the warm waters and fished it out. Inside the bag was little Nemo. My Sweetie became quite attached to the little thing and guarded it closely until we got back to the house. A lot of fuss was made about the transfer of water, etc. Quite educational ! It was decided that with his schedule , Certain Someone could not provide Nemo a good home, so he decided to let our hosts neighbors children adopt it. They have promised to send updates. Already we were informed that he has a brand spanking new aquarium and might get a little buddy to splash with. Its tough for Certain Someone as he also had to say goodbye to his good friends baby who was moving away soon. Two goodbyes in one day. I have to find a way to cheer him up.

Girls Beware of the Competition

Certain Someone and I really relaxed and enjoyed the good company. When we got back to the house after a very long day we fired up the grill and threw on some steaks and brats, chased by more beer and tequila. Then came show time . The Rocks brother in law hooked up the Playstation on the 60 inch TV screen ( the ultimate mans toys) and played some sort of game called Guitar Hero. Everyone was really good playing along to classic guitar rock pieces, with the exception of myself who ultimately crashed on the sofa. Certain Someone was impressive. In fact he was glued to the game . His face fell into that zombie like trance you see little boys and teenagers get into. All I remember was finally going to bed , and he eventually joining around 2 am or so. When we woke, around 10, he immediately went back to the TV and started on another game. My grown man had turned into a little boy in less than 24 hours. I'm worried because his friends are coming in from Sweden this week with his precious X box he left behind. I can compete with the work schedule, boys nights out, golf, etc. But the X box, I'm scared....

As he rolls by on roller blades and Boom box in one arm (very early eighties ghetto), he's always smiling like he took some Ecstasy tabs. Today he wore a short blue trench coat over his shiny hot pants. Freak Boy either arouses love or hate. I like to think that this probable IT geek ,or perhaps even a lawyer, likes to unwind at the end of a hard day ,flashing the patrons of the avenue cafes in Bucktown. Just my opinion anyway...

Hell...I'll Even Go To A Opening Of A Supermarket

Well the fall social season has officially kicked off for me today. No Opening Night of the Opera, or some gala. Today , that had a hint of Fall in the weather, I attended a supermarket opening. A friend invited me because his old school friend was part of the organization. The market is called Sunflower, and is a cross between the trendy Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Their hook is lower prices and a shopping experience made easier while supporting local farmers and vendors. I , being a foodie, was quite impressed. I strolled the aisles nibbling on organic pizza that trendy Asian girls in green vinyl distributed. I sampled some Dixie cups of wines, chatted with the cheese boys as they spread my cracker with some Brie concoction. The brands were top rate, and a very nice beer and wine section I may add. After the head of the Lincoln Park Chamber of commerce cut the ceremonial ribbon in front of the refrigerated glass produce room, I decided to do a little shopping for my dinner .Organic clams, pasta,oh and toothpaste for the morning. Great market, plan to go back.

The Surprise Was....Corteo.

I pushed the envelope, even goggling the date to see what came up. But In all my fantasies and thoughts , I could never have guessed the Cirquedesoliel's Cortero! We started our leisurely Sunday attending a Ferrari festival near the Italian Village with our friend 'The Rock'. If you remember I tried to fix him up with a crazy disaster last weekend. We all still hadn't gotten over her comments. Certain Someone and The Rock were like babes in toyland checking out the details of the Ferrari's and lone Masseratti. We posed and primped by the cars. I wore a snug zip up Ferrari Tshirt , and was approached by several people asking if I worked for the company. CLTV even approached me and interviewed me for a segment to run later on TV that evening. Not the boys, me! We then had a leisurely walk, lunch , and beers. 5:00 snuck up all to soon and my sweetie and I grabbed a taxi. He had wanted to blindfold me, but forgot. So he kept my head down in his lap until we reached our destination. I sensed United Center, and it was. I looked up and saw the tents. I had never attended a Cirquedesoliel performance but had heard rave reviews. It didn't disappoint. I covered Certain Someone in kisses, and we settled back to watch the show. Spectacular. How thoughtful of him. Another affirmation to my insecure self that he cares, and I'm a lucky girl. Kiss .

The Ever Changing Face Of Downtown Chicago

My mother used to go all 'old school' and recall about growing up in Chicago during the '50's and 60's'. The eldest of eight children wouldn't dare meet her mother downtown for a trip to Marshall Fields or Carsons without being dressed in a dress, white socks, white gloves, coat and matching hat. That's the way they did it back then. All of 'mamma's ' children always had the best quality clothes and were something to behold and admire. That standard carried through into everything they did. As a result all eight attained advanced degrees in their chosen fields. Quite a feat back then ,and even in this day and age. It wasn't that they were rich, but my grandparents worked hard and were go getters. They instilled this quality in their children. The standard was high. Like the high standards of retail in another era....
Yesterday I received a disturbing call. While trying to reconcile ,on a business front ,the merging of historic Marshall Fields into Macy's, another piece of big news hit. Carsons State Street was closing its doors. Now Carsons and Fields ran head to head . Both offered superb quality , service, and wares. Both were in landmark buildings that held so many stories. Christmas at Fields in to see the 'Tree' in the Walnut Room attracted people from all over. Both Carsons and Fields went all out for the window displays. I could go on. Macy's is committed to keep the Fields traditions alive. Chicago can wait and see. Carsons however, in my opinion lost its original luster a long time ago. After so many takeovers,I suppose that's bound to happen. But it had its loyal customer ,and will continue to in its many locations. The Carsons State street store was huge, and operating costs were cited as the a main reason for its closing. Its the end of a era. I remember the last time I saw my grandmother alive she took me, along with Auntie Mame to assist, on a shopping spree to Carsons, Fields, and Neiman Marcus for my high school graduation present. We endlessly tried on the high quality pieces for me take off to Paris where I was to attend college. When we got home she made me model them again to make sure they were just right and show off her oldest grandchild. I treasured my Dior wool pleated skirt and wore it for years until I couldn't no more. Like Mommy,I'm thankful for my downtown memories.

Blue Angels

It's late , and I'm just returning from a great girls night out with Gab's and some friends . When I woke this morning I wanted to cancel, due to fatigue from all the weekend festivities. But I'm glad I didn't. We had a 5 star dinner at IL Covo. Gab's compatriot is the head chef blending Australian and Italian cuisine. As we dined a film crew from a popular local show came into the joint and asked our opinions. Gab's did all the talking, PR pro she is, and really sold the place. I must return with Certain Someone for dinner for two.
Yesterday was spent on Mother Gumby's at her annual rooftop Air Water Show party. What a great food and drink spread she presented. Her apartment had amazing views and looked like something from architectural Digest. The crowd was warm and cozy. Certain Someone and I shared a chaise poolside and watched all the jets thunder by,while I rubbed his temples. Those boys love their toys. While I have mixed opinions about all the military activity in the current state of the world, you cant help but being impressed seeing those Blue Angels and other craft fly by. What a show and party. After the party we went shopping, which I'm coming to believe is his favorite pastime. He should start paying me as his personal shopper.
The night before we met with a friend and a blind date we set him up with. What a disaster! It really should have been filmed for reality TV. The young lady was loaded and quite suggestive to both our friend and Certain Someone. At the end of the evening we had quite a earful about her favorite "physical activity"and "recreational activity" . I felt bad for her, as she won't remember what she said and did. Remind me to not play Cupid again.
And last but not least was Gabis Birthday Celebration on Friday. Great night was had by all. I only wish I could have unwinded more ,But I had to rise early the next morning( 4:00 am) to perform makeover s for a wedding. The Birthday girl had a most memorable 29 th . She's a lucky girl ,and we should all feel blessed to know her.

Don't Forget What The Important Things Are

This evening a good friend of mine , who had read my recent blog entries, reminded me not to forget what the "important things are". This coming from a man that deals with life and death every day. Sometimes we get all wrapped up in the material, that we forget to count our blessings. I'm grateful for so much in my life . For having a loving family,Certain Someone, great friends, and most importantly health and hope. I'll take health and hope over the immaterial any day.

I realize as I'm about to write this,I've been influenced by Gabis blog entry from yesterday. She spoke of how her social calendar is filling up rapidly. It seems that theme is running through Certain Someone's and my lives. Today he squeezed me into his busy schedule , as he just returned late last night , for a quickie lunch at Typhoon Cafe. We literally pulled out the Blackberry's and Treos to coordinate the next few weeks. He complained that our very little free time ( weekends) are always taken with some social activity, and how we don't spend enough quality alone time together. I agree. He's always away for business during the week, and I work two jobs. If he is home, he's usually burning the midnight oil . Our precious weekends go by far too quickly , and most of it is spent sleeping. Sometimes it feels as if we don't have enough time for our friends , family,or each other. I look forward to a special 'surprise ' he has planned in the next few weeks, and some quick weekend get aways. In the meanwhile I'm content with a occasional quickie lunch in the afternoon. Wir finden schon eine Losung.

Where Does All This Money Come From

Yesterday Certain Someone and I went to one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, RL. Auntie Mame introduced me to this treat. The menu is pretty basic, emulating that old waspy private dining club feel. In my mind I always call it the rich mans McDonald's. On any given day you'll always see some prominent Chicagoan meeting friends there after a hard day of shopping or some cocktail event. So as Certain Someone and I settled in,and ordered deluxe burgers while we sat in the outdoor section, a group of flashy young nouveau types caught our attention. The two men looked like 'club' types with a impressionable young lady who was obviously impressed. The group sat sipping rose and sharing a charcuterie platter. Their conversation s vulgar, loud, yet intriguing . Certain Someone , masked in his Prada frames ,chastised me for not speaking German so we talk about them. I was riveted. Then a Mercedes pulled up, and another young one got out and yelled at the group. She joined the table and introductions were made and she was asked what her father did. By now we were rolling our eyes. It seems they were all in the restaurant/ club biz. Not to offend my European honey, but they epitomized the term Euro trash. We later saw them cruising Rush street giving shout outs . Certain Someone and I wondered how they do it and where this money comes from. As we walking back home we passed the Bentley dealer. Certain Someone loves his cars and gives me the history and stories of the exotic high end makes. We noticed a relatively young man about our age pull out in a Maybach. I"m sure that car fetches around a few hundred thousand. I kind of got depressed because making ends meet is a endless struggle. These Bright Young Things don't seem to burning the midnight oil,but yet seem to have huge incomes. Must be nice. I hope they are happy.

In one of my stores today, a associate came by the counter to brag that her church just got their Pastor a private Jet. I looked at her blankly. Her Pastor is a well know 'leader" in the community and a politician. I was always raised church and state shouldn't mix. Nevertheless he 'needed' this jet, I guess to tend to his other flocks. I 'm sure the man is doing some good ,somewhere, But it amazes me that people that make and have so little , build these self appointed leaders up . In my opinion that money could have built several food centers for the needy. Or maybe he plans to fly around Chicagos needy areas and drop food bundles?

When I got to the restaurant later that evening, I found it was relatively slow. A young mother was sitting with her baby and friend. While looking at the reservations for the next few days< she came up with the cutie pie. It seems he was magmatized by my good looks and wanted to say Hi. He was the flirtiest baby I ever saw. The female bartender got jealous because he was flirting with her earlier. Cutie Patootie had the nerve to wearing a shirt that said "Chick Magnet". By the end of his dinner , he had every female, even the two lesbians sitting in a corner, besotted. I guess men learn how to hustle , two time , and play at a young age.

Just random thoughts....

But I get sick reading about the young, for the most part, talentless starlets boozing and starving themselves through life. How disappointed I was to see the next generations of Greek shipping magnates hook up with the Paris Hilton's of the world. Give me some minor European Royalty drama. Like all of Prince Albert's love children. Angelina adopts them and he makes them! All races and creeds. I love it. My all time favorite magazine has to be Hola. Ever since I was a child , I loved looking at those glamorous and heavily tanned Spaniards and German princelings gallivanting around Marbella , or some resort. And I loved the challenge of piecing together my limited Spanish with the photos. The other day Certain Someone caught me with a Soap Opera Magazine. Yes, I read those too. If I can't watch them , I like to read about it. Its not hard to follow the story lines, as they rarely ever change over the years. But , they are fascinating nevertheless. Auntie Mame says I should write a column. I'd love to be a Page Six reporter for the N Y Post. I read it online everyday. I find most hacks just take from them and rehash the stories over and over. One item that caught my eye last week in their column was the tacky St. Tropez wedding of Pam Anderson and Kid Rock. The bride wore a white bikini and sailor hat. The groom a linen pork pie hat and was holding a beer. All this aboard a $24 million yacht. They read vows from a blackberry. Lars Ulrich was the best man. At the end if the ceremony , Kid Rock said something like 'She's the best woman in the world... She f---- me and scratches my back." She was quoted as saying in her vows that 'She was going to ride him like a cowboy..." If that aint love , I don't know what is. You see that's why I love gossip, Its like trying to drive by a accident without looking.

Com Ed cant keep up with the demands. While I read about it in the news, I really haven't been home much, so I've been lucky. However last night my luck ran out. I picked up Certain Someone from the airport , and we decided to dine in our favorite spot, China Town. Its becoming a ritual for us to try every restaurant we can. We never get tired of it. After a leisurely dinner and cocktails< we decided to go to my place that evening, as we were south. We made a quick stop to my local CoOp market , where he was amazed from the selection of obscure German beers. Thanks to the sophisticated and well travelled residents of Hyde Park, home of University of Chicago, one lacks for nothing in terems of food or drink. Ceratin Someone had to eat his negative perception of the South. When we got home , a hot oven of a condo awaited us. It took a while to get the AC going, as heat from the building rises. This is a blessing in Winter, but deadly in summer. We literally preferred to wait outside on my deck for a while before venturing in. Nevertheless we acheived a comfortable temp, and settled in for the night drinking great beers.Around 2:00 AM I stirred realizing it was too dark and quiet. The power was out! Nothing worse than being full of Chinese, Hot, and Tired. I opened all the windows waiting for any slight breeze. You could hear some voices seeking refuge outside, rather than stay in their 'ovens". Eventually it came back up around 4:30, but our good nights sleep was lost. I had to wake at 6:00 and proceed onto my supposed 14 hour day. Thankfully it was only 11.

I saw two photographers taking photos of a radiant bride and groom ,all dressed up to go to wedding ,purchasing ready made deli trays, cake, beverages, etc. The groom had a big grin as he took a sip of his fountain drink Pepsi. I realized this was not a commercial shoot, or news photographers, but the actual wedding photographers recording the happy couples moments for posterity. To the Happy Couple! What's up with me and the strange weekend weddings lately???

She Works Hard For Her Money, So You Better Treat Her Right

Today was a something! I arrived at the office to find I had another cryptic message from some woman who wouldn't identify herself. She left a urgent anonymous message last week that I dismissed as a predatory lender, bill collector, or something when I called the number . I didn't' leave a message. Come to find out , after a hint, that it was Susie Q, an old colleague of mine. She works for a bank now, hence ,the suspicions. Her message greeting was all about re finacing your mortgage, getting out of debt, etc. Just the type to prey on little old me. It was good to hear from her. It' s been a while . In fact the "baby" is now 7. Further more the eldest, who I used to clip Spice Girl pics and articles from my Hola's and Hello's, just turned 18 and is entering college! Jeez , how old am I now??? Hopefully we all can catch up.
So I started my first day as waitress, after a hellacious day at Job #1. Actually the four hours spent being cute, cool, social, and efficient went by quickly. I sneaked a few Blackberry emails to Certain Someone to give updates. He's stuck in some glamorous beachfront resort down south, bored out of mind. I don't pity him. He'll be back tomorrow , and we'll have a fun , busy weekend as usual , before he takes off again somewhere. As I was driving home, some anarchist punk kid darted out in the road and yelled "F--You, Beamer driver! I don't drive a Beamer, but similar brand. If he only knew what I had to do, to keep up the image.

Cluttered Life

For the past year the first comment that's comes out of peoples mouths when they visit me is 'My you have a lot of stuff"! I'm not a hoarder like Gumby ( his place is insane) ,but have managed to accumulate through inheritances, and shopping quite a collection of furniture, pot, pans, clothes, books, art, etc. And I haven't even tackled my storage room in the basement. I'm at the time of my life when I need to streamline, and perhaps one day pack up and go. My friend Terry is all about removing the clutter from her life, She cited a example of how when you start to let go of it, everything else falls away. Weight, stress, etc. She's very new age, but she has a point. And there is nothing worse than being burdened by 'things". I have truly enjoyed all my stuff, but its time for some other people to find good use. Don't think I'm giving up the clothes, Just some odds and end pieces of furniture, etc. When I posted, I received many offers in the first hour. Do these people sit in front of the computer all day lying in wait? It was interesting reading the requests, pleas, etc. I decided to go with a nice young lady looking out for a friend. I'm a little nervous (you can never be to careful), but Certain Someone will be on the premises when they come to take the things to a new home.

They would have a private ceremony at City Hall and the reception in a bar in Boystown, on the last day of the Gay Games. It was going to be a madhouse. So I picked up Certain Someone, who was not thrilled with the prospect of going to Boystown. We arrived later than expected, and settled in. The bar wasn't that crowded at that moment , but we still had to squeeze to get a seat. I gave a million 'kiss kisses" and plopped my ass down near Tom and his wife. We broke out with the same question "What's The story behind the wedding'? None of us could figure it out. But one look at the couple , and we knew they were happy, and it was real. Although the groom seemed pretty chummy with a cute male. In fact all three looked chummy. I guess it would be like inviting the mistress to your wedding. There goes my mind again... All the families were there, and supportive of the decision. Certain Someone relaxed to the techno trance Euro music he's so fond of. He got into it. However while we all ogled the hot bartenders who took off their tanks on occasion, he started to get flustered. I told him "as if they would be interested!" I suppose all the men felt a little insecure with those beautiful boys and their chiseled abs. Even the groom got into flashing his chest. After this weekend , I've seen just about all of it. Love comes in many forms. And the distance,a ocean will separate them , will ensure the longevity of the union. They can't get on each others nerves! I wish the couple happiness.

We decided to call in Rack , who was supposed to hanging out with Certain Someone that evening. It was nice to see the guys, and some other male friends who popped up. After about a million beers, mostly everyone left . That left me with the boys. I was now in on their Boys Night. We headed over to a great club called Moonshine. Certain Someone had earlier started to turn into territorial caveman fussing over my revealing shirt, alcohol consumption, and occasional cigarette( ok 6 or 7 !). Listening to guys talk about women was revealing. Oh how they twist things around ! At the bar the men started talking about meat . And this is what became disturbing. One pointed out how all things cute, are better tasting. For example ducks, kangaroos (Gabs swears by this), rabbits, turtles, lamb, ostrich, cows, chickens, goose, baby suckling pigs, horse ( if your French, or German in a Sauerbraten) , certain fishes, etc. The list can go on and on. The glee in their eyes revealed a lot. I'll be keeping one eye open when I sleep.

Just Call Me The Hostess With The Mostest

Even Certain Someone, who was not pleased of the prospect of me taking a second job, is cool with the idea now. You see I won't have to work a lot of weekends, which will free me up for girlfriend duties. Which are not x rated , if that's where your mind was going... And did I mention discounts on wine, dining credits , etc. ? Now I know in a few weeks I'll be silently cursing at some co workers , but in the end I love the food and wine biz. And Certain Someone can come around occasionally to 'keep an eye on me" while at the bar.

That's The Craziest Thing I Ever Heard

I'm waiting to go to the airport, and decided to catch up on some news. I've been following this whole Beirut crises with interest, as I have many connections to the place. Namely my father studied at the prestigious American University Of Beirut in the early sixties, when the place was the Monaco of the Middle East. The stories he'd tell me... Many things have changed since then, but recently it has begun to make a glamorous comeback. I have friends on both sides of the Middle East crises, and choose my words carefully, as to not offend. However, I was shocked to read several headlines saying that the US is waiving 'EVACUATION FEES" for citizens trapped over there! What the f---. They were going to be charged because some crazed Hezbollah militants kidnapped some Israeli soldiers, and all hell broke loose. I realize that's the tip of the ice berg in regards to this crises, but really. So if the US didn't waive the fee( but we can spend billions in a war in Iraq) what would the people have done? Been left to die amidst all the bombing. The European countries have been quicker to get their citizens out(they don't charge fees, I read). Crazy , senseless, and I suppose we all have to pay eventually for a problem that will continue to outlive all of us. So next time I plan a trip oversees I guess I'll have to factor some emergency evacuation money, because who knows what could happen with the world being what it is.

He said the most romantic thing as I showed my fright ( collective ewww now, but he's so sweet )! When I woke all the icky heat was washed away, and it felt good. I had a lot of driving to do today up North and what a perfect day to do it. I also negotiated a part time gig for me to make some extra$$$ . I'm really happy about it, and look forward to some fun restaurant hostess tales. That world is even crazier than retail. I'll be really busy, but that's how I thrive. Grace under pressure. Certain Someone is concerned about the amount of time apart, considering his schedule, but we'll make it through. So that's my life this week. I look forward to Saturday, when a friend of mine is getting married in a surprise wedding. Last I heard the groom was gay, but who knows. Love comes in many forms, and they do love each other. They are best friends. Isn't that what marriage is all about ? Oh well,
off to pick up Certain Someone from the airport. It will be good to see him. Life gets so busy.

Hot As Hell

My Air Conditioner is not as strong as I'd like it to be, but I survive. Thankfully summers are brief here in Chicago. I went to the gym earlier, had a nice workout, but didn't dare attempt to even lay out on the fabulous rooftop deck and pool ( which is the place to be during summer in Chicago). Just too damn hot. Certain Someone went golfing in the barbaric heat at the crack of dawn and had himself a good old time. I don't know how he whacked those balls and carried all that stuff across those links. But he's in his element I suppose. We ended up meeting and having Lebanese food later on. The restaurant was sweltering, and we drank Lebanese beer after Lebanese beer to stay cool. Thankfully the movie theater was cool and cozy as we watched Strangers With Candy. I love that off twisted humor of Amy Sedaris. As we left the theater , the night air turned hotter than a bath house in Boystown. I don't know about you, but I can't wait till cool crisp fall. My favorite season. Steam is not sexy.

Happy Friday

Yes its Friday. Last weekend I anticipated a week of hell. While it didn't turn out that bad, I'm still relieved its over. I executed a mega event in my largest door , during the slowest time of the year. Not my ideal choice, but we did it. Anything is better than nothing right? The event turned out ok ,with pretty good increase in sales. And we all attracted a lot of attention dressed as old time news reporters in black linen fedoras. We even had a photo shoot with our in house photographer for future publication. Hope I look slim in the pics.
Certain Someone has been extremely busy with work, and we have only seen each other once. While my nights were free, I choose to keep a low profile and spend time on me. I thought a lot and enjoyed the solitude. I feel however that I'm pissing off some friends with my choices lately, but so be it. It's my time and life, and I'm enjoying it. I plan to catch up with a few people I haven't seen in a while. I got a nice phone call from my Virtual Friend last night. It was nice to talk for a change. He had disappeared for a while. Everyone needs to that from time to time, and it shouldn't take away from your relationships.
So now I'm home, resting up for the weekend, which will be low key as well. I plan to cook Certain Someone a nice lasagna as we both rest from the travails of the week past. Then we both will pursue our individual fitness goals on Sunday. Then back to the same old grind....

A young 21 year old man on the verge of so many wonderful things was taken away in the blink of a eye by a careless accident. I felt for his mother ,and immediately, told my boss who had lost her young son a few years back in another senseless tragedy around this time. Then, a little later a friend informed a group of us by email about someone's parent being diagnosed with a serious condition. I hope that person can be strong enough for both himself and his parent. They have a long road ahead of them. When I got to the store I heard another sales clerk had also lost her son last weekend. She found him dead in his condo, after not hearing from him for a while.
Certain Someone and I met at the end of the day for quick dinner, before he resumed working on a project. Its important to take time out to smell the roses. He pointed out all this death and illness puts things in perspective. I dropped him off, and went home. My neighbor called informing me she was going out of town again, because her 42 year old brother died of a heart attack today. They had just buried their father last month. My mother used to say , 'it always comes in threes".

I'm very happy and content with my life lately. So content that while contemplating what to blog about today , I came to the conclusion that things are pretty normal lately. Usually I'm a freak magnet, but I'm noticing that since you know who entered the picture ,the freaks have disappeared . Or maybe I'm not seeking them out. I called Gumby today , always one to provide comic relief, and he's all about business. All my friends are cutting back on the partying for financial and just 'Too damn tired reasons". I've been incredibly busy, and still don't seem to do everything I need to do.
There is one place however , that still amuses me. That's my counter at a major department store downtown. What a cast a characters! The other day the company van dropped me off at the loading docks in preparation for a event. As we drove I realized I knew a lot of the colorful characters on the street. Like the eccentric old lady wrapped in boas that sells her costume jewelry while she roams the aisles and street's and plays all the pianos throughout the store. Or the stalker friend ex boyfriend of one of my employees who fancies himself a designer. The other day he stopped by ,and we all of course ignored him, while wanting to bust out laughing. He was dressed in a flowing Roman style toga . I wanted to scream ' Hail Caesar'. All he needed was a crown of laurel leaves. He wonders why he gets beat up... I saw him late that evening walking down 47th Street,a definite no no dressed like that. But I thought ,as I laugh at him,he'll most likely have the last laugh and become larger than John Galliano or something. To be genius is to be daring. Then there's the customers. Its hard to transform some of the clients we get. We had to talk a lady into going through a makeover and skin care consult, because she felt self conscious about her large mustache, but yet didn't want to wax it off. Guess she was worried that the makeup would get all caked up in it.My makeup artist suggested we tell her to bleach, but then we'd have blond hair on dark skin, Yuck. When she comes back ,we'll give her to the new girl . See how she handles it. And now that the weather is warmer, my regular derelicts don't pass through as often , sampling my testers and yelling obscenities. Even the regular senior citizen makeovers that show up for every event, want their pictures taken, and don't really buy anything , have been low key. Maybe its summer, maybe the weird ones are all on vacation, or maybe I've lost my freak mojo.

What a crowd our friends Nic and Rackesh assembled. I think I met just about every German professional in the tri state area. The beers were flowing and Deutsch was spoken all around. Sweetie and I wore our German Jerseys and wristband in support. The team didn't disappoint! And in hindsight to today's nasty spectacle between the French and Italians, what a class act. Its interesting to witness the modern German perspective in response to their evident national pride. The world was watching, but really couldnt' say anything. In my and Certain Someones opinion the Germans were the "true" winners in the World Cup and they should be complimented on being wonderful hosts. I like my sweeties friends and country, and hope I may someday learn the language. Well now that all this soccer hoopla is over, back to reality of the upcoming work week.

Long holiday Weekend

20060704 July 12

Certain Someone picked me up late afternoon for our trek to Milwaukee. We had a beautiful , serene drive to Milwaukee where he's been based for the past two weeks on a project. After we checked into the Hyatt and rested a bit, the "Sultan"((my on again off friend of some years) called us. He was also in Milwaukee to see Paul Simon at Summer Fest, and we agreed to meet him and his girlfriend before the concert. When we got to the venue we immediately searched out for Bratwurst to satisfy our hunger, and of course washed down with beer. Certain Someone and I exchanged pleasentries with the Sultan and his friend, and we all went in to see a great ,mellow, relaxing concert. I was exhausted and loved snuggling up to Certain Someone as Paul serenaded us with the classics. I couldn't have asked for a better summer night. We walked back to the hotel along the River Walk exhausted, full, but happy. Before we went to bed we made a note to catch the Pig Roast at the German food stand the next afternoon.

Sunday July 2, 2006
After a late sleep in, and the sound of housekeeping outside motivating us to make our check out time,we got ready for day 2 of Summerfest. Our primary focus was eating and certain Someone making the Hole in One sponsored by Chevy on the lake at the fest. After I came out the shower,my Blackberry was chirping. It seems all my exes were coming out the wood work. Someone I was involved with earlier this year texted me to say hello. I wished him a happy holiday, and informed him I was with my new boyfriend in Milwaukee and life was essentially good. He got the picture and stopped texting.Certain Someone was curious and maybe a little peeved, but a trooper! It didn't help that another good male friend of mine ( strictly platonic friend) called a few times to check in and wish the Germans luck with their match in a few days. He was kind of taunting about it. We walked back to the fest along the River Walk and stayed a bit by the Art Museum and observed the seagulls swoop down and attack stupid little fishes that kept swimming up to surface , begging to be ate. A scientific debate ensued. When we got the fest we went to the Pig Roast. Out of all the food there, this was our favorite. It almost reminded my sweetie of home. He didn't make the Hole in One, but I doubt anyone did. We drove home , but did a bit of outlet shopping first. What a man, a marathon shopper if I ever saw one. I persuaded him to try some new colors in his shirts to compliment his coloring .When we arrived to Chicago , totally shopped and wiped out , we had a quick dinner in China town and went home to watch movies. He even let me give him his first facial. Men kill me with secretly liking this stuff!

Monday July 3, 2006
We had another leisurely sleep in. Although my sweetie woke up with a zit. I guess the mask pulled it out. We lazed around and I made him steak and eggs for breakfast. I was giving a party that night and running around prepping. We loaded the car up , and I drove off to my Aunts where the party would take place. She lives in the best location for fireworks with lake and river views . Check out Gabs blog about the night. I assembled a fun, witty, fabulous crew . My aunts friends even came over, along with some family. The generations mixed well . Caprhinas, martinis of all kinds, beer, shots of Aqauvit, all types of food flowed. I did not get home till the wee hours. What a blast. Certain Someone also met my Aunt for the first time and presented her with a orchid and me with a rose. It was a great debut for him to my friends and family.

Tuesday July 4, 2006
I woke up with the nastiest biggest headache. Consequence of to much partying.Ceratin Someone had a conference call which made us late for the soccer match of Germany vs Italy. We were to meet friends, but couldn't get in the pub due to large crowds went back home and watched the match. Have you ever seen grown men cry? I felt bad for all my German friends. I dragged him off the couch still weeping to make it to the end of the last event of the Holiday,my other Aunts BBQ. Upon entry I was attacked by thirsty relatives, They were waiting for my annual cocktail ( tequila sunrises). He was amazed on the size of my family. Aunts, Uncles, cousins, Great Aunts, and people I know I'm related to , but can't remember their names, met him. He even charmed the children. The food was plentiful there too, and we packed up some plates to go. At the end of four wonderful days together, we called it a night, as I had work the next day. What a great holiday.

In Memoriam

Sunset on Lake Michigan

Yesterday was the second anniversary of my fathers death. How could I have forgotten such a thing? Its funny because he's been on mind the past few weeks. My friend Paige just lost her mother at the same palliative care unit Daddy died in. Also my friend Johns mothers first anniversary is approaching soon. June is and was a sad month for a lot of people close to me. But June 30 snuck in as quietly as Daddy passed away that evening. I was sitting in vigil by his side for about 24 hours in the luxurious hospice suite overlooking Lake Michigan. His breathing was labored but quiet. I was engrossed in reading , and realized I no longer heard anything. When I went over to check , he was gone. Very quietly he slipped away. Such a different passing than my mothers. I just sat there with him until my friends and family arrived. His body and soul were finally at peace. So yesterday , I , unaware of what day it was, spent the day in relative peace. Life truly does go on, our memories become cloudy, but we never forget.

He started taking out some ' merchandise' wrapped in toilet paper and asked our opinions as to which we liked most. I could just flash back to that show Good Times, when that pimp like character has all these jewels underneath his big fur coat he flashes potential customers with. Although Gumby acquired his goods totally through legal means and was not selling. I even got a weak but relaxing chair massage . I warned the massage therapist that I wall full of tension. She thought I said I was sensual. Whatever!I left the girls after a few hours, as my Certain Someone returned to town. I met him at another bar for a farewell party for a mutual acquaintance. My poor schatzi was tired, sick, and a little cranky. I really felt his misery. He couldn't even enjoy his chicken fingers. In his agony he noticed Benny the Swede from last Saturday. Of all the joints in town, Benny pops up there! As we left and passed Benny, I reminded him of our earlier meeting. He said in his best Friends Joey accent ' How you doing...?" It was hard to recognize him with a shirt and no bottle of Skane.

Vacation In My Mind

Today I saw my Auntie who has just returned from her week in Rome. The trips purpose was to see my Great Uncle Bob's painting exhibition, and a reunion of sorts for him to see all his former dancers. Normally I tag along on these international adventures , but this time Auntie went solo with guide books and cameras I made sure she had. This time she had to figure out the spots and take the photos. Her photos turned out excellent. It was nice to see my 80 something uncle still hip, fashionable, and adored. He never stops as I hear he just returned from his annual sojourn to Ghana. You see my uncle had a well known dance troupe in Rome specializing in AFRO dance, before he moved to Austria to continue dance and begin the next phase of his career , painting. He's shown all over Austria and other parts of Europe. Last fall they published a book on his life. What a life! So glamorous with his parts in Spaghetti Western's, the handsome lovers who looked like film stars. When you looked at his photos dating back from the 40's you felt the eternal youth and la vie boheme. They really knew how to live, although I imagine he's most likely only one of few still around. Everyone last week seemed so fun to hang around with judging by the photos. Uncle Bob even had his own film crew tagging along. How I wish I was there. That's why I love my family. We are flung all over from the fields of Mississippi , the villages of Nigeria, the cities of the US, most of Europe, and the cobbled streets of Rome.

Just hope I don't gain 10 pounds from all the laziness. But I'm sure if I do, I'll burn it all off when Certain Someone and I go off to Milwaukee this weekend to check out SummerFest on their waterfront.Anyway its pouring now, another excuse not to leave my nest...

A friend who accompanied us warned us to hide it, as every drunk Swede would make a beeline for some. They did. It surprised me that we had the most authentic fare. Most people were eating chips, soda, barbecued burgers, and sausages. The head of the young Swedish group came over and was very nice , as we knew no one. Certain Someone joined the organization, but never has time to attend events. She asked how we were connected to Sweden , and we explained. It tickled me that I could say I have family there, because I do. After a while everyone did a drunken dance around the Maypole. I soon learned that its a type of fertility dance. Understandably Certain Someone sat it out and watched. He did join in a game of Bramball (similar to baseball with a big plastic red bat). While he exerted himself with a cute tshirt with a big S (for Sweden) in the center, our friend and I chatted up the others. We were introduced a strapping brute called Benny, who just arrived from Stockholm. He liked my shirt with the Swedish Flag that said Absolut Svenske, and offered us some Skane( more schnapps). He looked like he had his fill and started to complain about Swedens loss to Germany earlier in soccer. Now my opportunistic sweetie had watched the match earlier that day wearing that big Sweden t shirt , under his German Jersey (shameful)! My friend told Benny that my boyfriend was German ,and was here.He started yelling ' Vars the Yarman, the Yarman, I'm going to kick is ass..." I pointed him out on the field. Certain Someone told me he heard the maniac screaming for him on the field, but Benny was to drunk to follow through on his threats. It was all good fun. We went home after sundown , totally exhausted ,but content after our Midsommar day by the lake.

Maybe it started with me watching soccer matches with Daddy( who was Nigerian, and therefore a huge soccer fan). He always wanted a boy he could play the game with. Some Sundays he dragged me out to the yard and had me do dribbling exercises with him. I didn't mind it,but I was no jock. I remember he used to take me to the Washington Diplomats( a fledgling attempt at US soccer) games in RFK Stadium in DC. We weren't really close, but those are the best times I remember with him.In his last days , their was nothing he'd like more than watching endless matches on the Spanish Language stations. It's a shame Nigeria didn't qualify this year, but it seems some really good players are of Nigerian descent.
So tonight I went into a really industrial part of the city to procure Germany jerseys for 'Certain Someone' and I to wear on Saturday morning when they play Sweden. My poor schatzis loyalties are divided between his two countries. He's a German National with a Swedish soul. I 'm really getting all into the hype. The United Nations of Friends send email after email with score updates. One member is over in Germany now watching some matches. Sometimes the emails come in German, and I haven't a clue to what they say,but they are happy in tone. It's all so exciting, and I'm actually enjoying it.So as I picked our shirts tonight, I saw a beautiful Addidas green and white jersey for the Nigerian team. How Daddy would have liked that and all this hoopla.

Now , I'm hardly powerful, but at times well connected. I was supposed to attend with my aunt, but she's jetting off to Rome as I type (I should be with her).I was pleasantly surprised..This was the best fashion film I has seen in a while, or ever! Meryl Streep was perfect. Ann Hathaway a dream. I loved this movie. It really captured what the fashion world was all about. Don't underestimate it! After the movie, we debated on whether the character made the right decision. Me,I would have stayed as Streep's assistant, dropped the chef boy friend, and enjoyed the hard work and good life. Am I really that heartless? It was too glamorous to pass up. But love and ethics conquer all! In the end you still loved all the characters, and understood their motivations.
After the movie, the Power Gals trugded up to the Conrad Hotel( formerly The Meridian), and had a swanky rooftop reception. Tropicana Berry and Mango martinis flowed. The appetizers were out of this world! After seeing a film that mocked a size 6 as a FATTY, I couldn't have cared less , as I popped hors d'oeuvres after hors d'oeuvres in my mouth. I saw and talked to my CEO, a wife of a legendary basketball player,,and caught up with some old friends. Its good to be a woman in Chicago. The nucleus of Chicagos power was all on top of the roof, and they happened to be women. What would that other gender do without us?

The ticket prices are just skyrocketing now,so it makes you really think ,do I need to go to this?Thankfully 'Certain Someone' loves the whole social whirl, but there is always that risk that he'll be called away to some place for business at a moments notice. Hopefully we can make the most important of all this year Opening Night of the Opera Turanadot. There would be nothing better than listening to Nessun Dorma with him at my side dressed in Black Tie.
Then there's the whole email invitation. These are harder to keep track of. A lot of groups and people are saving time and money with the paperless invite. However while I do my darndest, they can just get luck in the Black Berry shuffle. Lately the UN has been firing off invite after invite. Gabs had to remind me that one of 'my' events I invited her to, was a Thursday, not Friday.Anytime I receive something remotely of interest I shoot it off to my email list. On Saturday, in my new role as 'Certain someone's ' secretary came up with a belated birthday celebration for him and another friend of ours , Peter. I secured two Miami style rooftop cabanas at Iggys in Wicker Park ( a funky section western section of Chicago). The theme of our group being the United Nations continued, with a cross section from Brazil,Germany, England,Australia, and the good ole USA ( with a little Nigerian flava thrown in). The drinks were plentiful( mango martinis and metropolitan being the favorites), the food satisfying, and the company chic and fun. A group of us presented 'Certain Someone' with a present of Landys XO cognac , otherwise known as Happy Dog. Its given this name because of ,how shall I say it?... it has a dog stopper with a hard on.And as one man called it once 'it's a mans drink!". So how perfect . We then went on to party at and dance at Max Bar after they kicked us off the roof running up a $500 tab. Max Bar stays open until 5:00 AM. We all danced the night away in the VIP section .Alas we had to call it a night / morning as we planned to get up to watch Australia vs Brazil in the World Cup. We actually made it to that event the next morning and nearly passed out from exhaustion in the pub. We decided to go back home take a nap , and wind down the hectic weekend watching Korea vs France.Did I mention the elevators went out, and we had to climb 26 flights of stairs when we got back? All to soon the weekend was over and the my sweetie drove me home.I think its good luck to encounter a rainbow on the way back, don't you?

It seems another colleague of theirs was in a conference in another country, and met a US colleague, who mentioned that he meet the new girlfriend back at a event the previous week. Whew! Honestly don't these people have businesses to manage, than to gossip about us. Then a few days before, a co worker approached him saying he heard that I was mad at Certain Someone' last week because he chose to watch the World Cup, rather than volunteer with me. It seems perhaps someone overheard a conversation I had on the bus making a comment in jest. Well it got back to him in two days . My Auntie Mame always warns me to be discreet and careful about what I say and do,because you never know who's listening and watching. I guess I 'm getting a inkling of what BRANGELINA must feel like.

A Day At the Races

Today I took a half day and attended Ascot Day at Arlington Race Tracks with my good friend Irene and her English beau Andrew. We had been looking forward to this for a while, as in Chicago one doesn't get to wear a "Alexis Carrington /Four Weddings and a Funeral" style hat. Irene and I ventured deep into the South Side to purchase hats that one wouldn't see coming and going , from a client of mine Hazel Lowe Boutique. Hazel Lowes is a institution among the preachers wives set, so what better place? I find she has hats that rival anything you can find on the Mag Mile.
So anyway Kenny G(my old friend the Sultan), Irene, Andrew , and I took the train to the event , rather than drive.I invited Kenny G month's ago because he and Andrew hit it off as fellow attorneys. ('Certain Someone'is still in the picture!!! )We arrived and immediately perused the betting forms. Andrew gave a quick lesson in terminology, which completely went over my head. I decided to save my pennies. The Governers Suite was waiting for us with lavish buffets and drinks. I just had to get me a Pimms Cup (veddy English you know!). I received a phone call from work about a old employee of mine, eyes were on me as I said out loud 'You mean the one that looks like a stripper?,Miss Bump and Grind..." My voice does get loud at times.Kenney remarked on what I interesting life I lead , and the people I know. For the most part we decided to stay in the enclosed suite and look at the races on the big screen TV's. It was very hot and windy outside. In all actuality I don't even think I watched a race or saw a horse. I was to busy checking out all the feathers and hats, eating, and imbibing was all so grand and English. I felt pride that my ancestry had a tiny connection to the British Empire.

Madonna, need I say more?

And now a break from World Cup madness... My 'Certain Someone' took me unexpectedly to see "Her Madgesty" tonight at the United Center. I knew he was planning to go with colleagues with tickets he had purchased 'before me'. I wasn't tripping because I had a meeting that night anyway, and a night off would be good for us. However his colleagues dropped out last minute and I agreed to accompany him. I was worried we'd be late, with the show starting at 7:30. Nic joined us, and we headed over after my meeting. The Diva kept us waiting a good hour before she got started. We didn't mind at all, and I saw some fellow fashionista friends in the audience. We did the customary pecking 'kiss kiss', and settled into our seats. Madonna didn't disappoint. I admit, while I'm not her biggest fan, she is a style icon,no' if,ands,or buts about it'.She seemed a little weary at first in her Gautier Riding Habit, but she picked up with the energy and costume changes. I thought it odd her fascination with all things equestrian,(considering her riding accident a little while back) , which almost bordered on beastiality. Was she conjuring up Marlene Dietrich or Catherine The Great? The images were fierce and her body was perfection. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and she's a living testament to that. Of course their were some obscure Kabbalah references in regards to a charity she promoted with haunting images of children in Malawai, while she sang ' Christ Like ' on a crucifix. That image bothered me a bit.You cant take the Catholic school girl out me,and I'm not even Catholic. But she's an 'artist', and she takes risks to get her point across. I loved her dancers, all with interesting faces. My favorite sequence was a white pant suited number , a la Saturday Night Fever. Then she stripped down into a Studio 54'ish white and lilac body suit , and boggied away. She really was infectious, As my 'Certain Someone', Nic, and I danced away. I could just imagine her teaching Lourdes and Little Rocco how to 'bust a move". And I don't care how rich or famous you get, you always seek your parents approval.Maddonna pointed out her father was in the audience ,and asked if he was proud of her . A 47 year old woman at her physical, personal, spiritual, and professional peak asking 'Did I do OK, are you proud of your little girl?". I guess on some level we are all the same, aren't we?

So What Did You Do This Weekend...?

Water Cooler
Originally uploaded by Cosmic Kitty.
It's late Sunday night and I'm, just returning home. What a weekend!. It started yesterday morning at the crack of dawn. I joined a friend (who happens to be a colleague of ' Certain Someone' and recruited me for her corporate team) at Grant Part to take part in a charity initiative called Chicago Cares. Several major corporations underwrite and encouraged their employees to sign up for a day of "projects" in and around Chicago. Our teams two buses headed to the Englewood area on Chicagos South Side to Miles Davis Academy. We were greeted by the Assistant Principle who told us a little about the school and area. Despite the tragic history of the neighborhood you can still feel the cheerfulness of and hope of little tots of the academy. We were given our assignments and went to paint the modular classrooms and bathrooms Blue Bell Blue and Optimistic Yellow. It was backbreaking , but enjoyable work. By the end of the day I was had a blue ass, and was covered in blue freckles. Its a shame that the powerful and wealthy city of Chicago's public school system cant afford basic upkeep for its schools.
I met a 'Certain Someone' later all cleaned up. He had spent the day lazily watching the World Cup( Sweden 0/ Trinidad Tobago 0). He took me to his company's event in Navy Pier. I met several of his colleagues, bosses, and their families. We ate, socialized,a capped the evening off with a late nighttime Fire Works cruise along the lake. We stood on deck with his good friend and pregnant wife from Brazil shivering as we watched the Chicago skyline become highlighted with the colorful pyrotechnic. Ahhhhhh! It was magical. I joked that everyone at his company had tons of babies, because so much time is spent ' reuniting' after being sent all over the globe on special projects. After we left the party to meet some friends we ran into a gang of youths street fighting in the 'Posh' Streeterville neighborhood. We had never seen a mob like it, and quickly ran through the scene before gunfire or something erupted. I told him to never crack on my South Side again, and this was his backyard. Several minutes later three police cars, a ambulance, and a huge Paddy Wagon arrived to cart the youths away.
The next day we planned to attend both MidSommer Fest and the Blues Festival. Sometimes the best laid plans fall apart. However we did make it to the MidSommer Fest in Andersonville, in which he was looking forward to it (loving all things Swedish). We worked our ways throughout the stalls sharing dishes. We were expecting more of a Swedish Ethnic Celebration, instead it was more of a alternative event. Nevertheless the food was great, and we managed to get our fix of Swedish Pancakes with ligonberries. Yum! By the time we got back downtown, I was to tired and cold to attend another festival. So we winded down with watching a game and ordering some Thai. That's the beauty of Chicago, you can eat your way around the globe in 5 hours or less. It was one of the best and most enlightening weekends I've had in a while.

Six Degrees Of Separation II ...Coincidence or a sign?

The past week I've encountered more strange occurrences than most. I have to ask myself is it a sign from the universe,or a coincidence? The first sign was that Gumby has taken up with a great acquaintance of mine. I only realized their ' relationship" , through a group email. When I asked ,he fessed up. I wish them happiness. Both of them will be very good for each other.Vive le difference!. Then my 'Certain Someone', who's home now (YIPPE) for a hot second!, texted me from a restaurant from Stockholm. Out of all the people , in all the joints in Sweden, he runs into my cousin ( who he doesn't know, but from a picture) and introduces himself. Weird or what? Then at the Cubs game , Rakesh and I realized our mothers were classmates at the same premier historically Black University, Howard in DC. We probally were in the same daycare ,or something. The icing on the cake was the appointment of a new Account Executive for the DC region. I remember her from when I was a punk nosed kid , just out of art school, working in retail Maryland/D.C. How I used to cower when she came in for her visits as a Regional! Now she barely recognized me ,sitting at my desk, working the phones. She should be proud one of us got from behind the counter. So I ask myself, coincidence?...Or have I stayed to long at fair?

Haters

But her question has surfaced in my brain from time to time. I asked my Auntie Mame, and she called her a hater. I guess I blog because its fun,and I know a lot of great interesting people who keep a smile on my face. In this busy world its nice to unwind at the end of the day and recount the events. I love hearing feedback from my friends who I'm separated from by distance( and it saves on the phone bill!). I'm thankful to Gab's for showing me the way. So in the immortal words of my Auntie Mame, I should have said to that girl... "Don't Be hatein...."

Fellini-esque

Fellini copy

I dragged myself out around 8:00 pm. to catch up with the gang at the May Fest at Lincoln Square. I really wasn't planning on going anywhere, as I was still recovering from the night befores Out of Africa soiree .Previous to going out, I was cooking pate for a family event the next day. The heat of the kitchen, and a barely humming air conditioner motivated to put on a skimpy tank top.If the May Fest was anything like Taste , I'd be a sweaty mess. Well as soon as I got out the temp dropped. Nevertheless I braved the chill and drove up north to Lincoln square. Now Lincoln Square is on of my favorite enclaves in Chicago, because you feel as if you stepped right into Germany. However the festival didn't really live up to the neighborhoods image. I only saw one man walking about in lederhosen. The first image that greeted me was a drunk man on all fours barking at his dog. The group of us pushed through the crowds and ordered up large plastic stiens of beer. I was aghast that I saw quite a few drinking the domestic Rolling Rock. What was the point? Then we ventured over to get some brats, and another sausage whose name escapes me( it resembles a American polish sausage). We raced to finish out 'tickets" by 10:00 and purchase all the beer we could. After a while we went to the "cultural "part of the evening, carnie games.None of us won any of those cute fluffy animals. A booth caught my eye, a Paintball station. I handed over $5 to shoot 31 balls out of a rifle. At my 29 shot, the man scolded me that I was shooting to close to pedestrians, and to cease. I was so wrapped up in the shooting,,I started to do a artistic bump and grind as I worked on my pattern. But I was just shooting blanks. My friends looked at me a little weird when I was done.It was oddly exhilarating.
As the fest started to close, we tried to go to a another beer hall . I dumped my beer , much to the amazement of a young Latin male, who proceeded to follow my friends to ask about me. When told my age he was stunned. I could have been his mother if I had him at 13.The long lines deterred us from going in. We finally ended up at a Macedonian 'lounge" because it looked empty, and we all needed to pee. A really bad torch singer serenaded us ,which caused me to believe it was actually a Karakoe bar. Young pre pubescent girls did a tango , as she sang.To appease the server we ordered some Macedonian beer and settled in . A young man at the next table told me it was a Maedonian mob hangout, which made us applaud louder when the singer finished her set, at Gab's urging was tempted to try one of a bank of slot machines that a lone old lady was playing. Josh checked them out , and affirmed they looked dubious( the old lady rose seller being a plant).
We all decided to head on over to BoysTown and go to Roscoes. I haven't been in a gay bar in ages. After tonight I know why. All the beautiful buff boys ,just being fabulous, and not a chance for me .The few drag queens inside scared me with their makeup. I decided to call it a night, and got my car from the valet. As I pulled off , a man flashed his chest to me, and made me swear not to tell.

Out Of Africa

African safari route

Last night was the Auxiliary Board of the Lincoln Park Zoo's Out Of Africa benefit. Oh what a night! Although around 6:00 pm before the party I thought I'd collapse from exhaustion. I had spent the whole day helping Paul Anthony (AKA Princessepessa) set up the visual part with his friends, co workers ,and students. Lets just say he got his revenge on me for years of me bugging him about my visual setups for events in the stores!.My back and legs were sore, a hanger went through my sneaker, and my newly done hair was a sweaty mess. I was covered in florist foam crumbs and sand. But the end effect was 'Oh so dazzling!' Paul had created a luxurious African tent in the middle of Serengeti with wind blown canvas chandeliers that glowed warm red, and orange hues with images of giraffes and elephants in the wild. The bar had the Liquor logos on African shields with plumes that conjured up images of Masai Warriors. The tables were set with large glass sand filled candle holders wrapped in tall grass and twigs. Princesspessa did all this while slinging his godson around in papoose .I suspect he'll be a future artist.
I cleaned up good, and met my large international gang at the party . The food and drinks were flowing. Gabs,Caro, Irene,Tristan ,and Josh looked so glamorous. I played the social butterfly role as I schoomezed with the others all the while dancing, taking photos, eating, and drinking.I could have danced all night, but my bones and feet were aching. Gumby showed up looking dapper in his tux. Of course he couldn't wear a normal shirt, but one embroidered with Bugs Bunny. He's always the one to provide comic relief. Then my two JD'S ( we have a joke that every black man on the board is called JD) were real lookers in their formal wear. JD I in a flawless black tux,and JD III in a cream dinner jacket with red and white polka dot tie/ cumberband. Did I mention he wore spats! I made sure I took lots of pictures for the folks and Momma Roxy (JD III"s mother). All to soon it was time to leave, and we went home . Princesspessa showed up with his crew to break down the set. I wearily climbed into bed and as I was drifting to sleep, my Blackberry went off. It was that Certain Someone texting me from Europe. To bad he wasn't there at the party, he was missed!

I Know What Side My Bread Is Buttered On

So tonight I ventured up north for my first Cubs game. Now most people who know me , know that I could care less about most sports. My mother used to warn me about large events and crowds. It didn't help that the news was always filled with hooligan stories, after game barfights, and weird misfits who ran into Center Field half dressed, and started to beat up people. Not to mention the boozy aspect of the whole thing. I just always thought of it as some slightly sleazy Northside Single party scene. But I never had a opportunity to attend a game to prove my perceptions wrong.
Last year I attended my first baseball game at the newly named US Cellular Field. I am a South Sider as a fairly new resident, and its where my maternal family came from. However the part of the South Side the stadium was in , I avoided like the plague. If you go back into Chicago history it wasn't a very welcoming place for blacks.Nevertheless , I went to my first White Sox game last year and was pleasantly surprised. The game escaped me, but the food was awesome, and everyone was jovial, but well behaved. Not a hooligan in site. I had to eat my words to my smug friend who took me. And wouldn't you know it , that was the year they went onto World Series victory!
Tonight I braced the larger crowds with Caro and met up with Racekesh and Peter. Wrigley Field was definitely not as slick as Cellular Field. As we climbed the endless ramps to our seats, the scents of brats tempted me. We all immediately after finding our section, headed for the food and beer lines. My first brat was a little to soggy due to much sauerkraut. I noticed my seat mate Racekesh go on to another food item(deep dish pizza). I wondered if I could get away with eating more , so I got some Nachos with tons of Jalepenos. Peter and Caro seemed to restrain themselves. It started getting colder, and I longed for some steaming fried dough, but I couldn't find any. US Cellular had fried dough! So I purchased a sweatshirt instead( there went the money I saved on parking).I barley paid attention to the game , because I didn't have that big screen TV to guide me and tell me what was going on. All I remember was a few exciting last innings, and suddenly it was over , abruptly. I felt very unsastisfied, and my tummy was starting to hurt. I wanted more food and action.I wanted a winning team. We all grudgingly got up and made the long exodus out of the stadium into the night, all the while pushing our way. I think next year I'll try football. The culinary wonders of those tailgate parties!
